BACKGROUND
AND OVERVIEW
The
Goal of the "Kenya Primary Education Project in Poor Urban Areas of Nairobi
(KPEP)” is to contribute to the achievement of “Universal
Free Primary Education” which was introduced in 2003 and the “Education
for All” commitments consistent with the country’s Poverty Reduction
Strategy.
The
KPEP is a development initiative between the Government of Kenya and the Federal
Republic of Germany under the German-Kenyan Financial Cooperation.
It
is implemented through an agreement between the Kreditanstalt
für Wiederaufbau (KfW) as financing agency and the City Council of Nairobi (CCN) assisted by an International
Consultant as implementing agency.
 The
Project is conceptualized within the overall framework of the Kenya Education
Support Programme (KESSP) and links with the KESSP investment Programmes for
School Infrastructure.
The
Project concerns rehabilitation, extension and equipment of pre-existing public
and non-formal primary schools in poor urban areas of Nairobi in order to
improve their physical infrastructure and the general teaching and learning
environment.
 The
Project design has two distinct but inter-related components, a Technical
Component comprising design and execution of infrastructure measures
at 11 Nairobi Primary Schools, such as new construction and rehabilitation of
approx. 325 Classrooms, 100 Ancillary Rooms and Sanitary Facilities (450
toilets) offering new and improved learning facilities for over 20.000 pupils
and a Social Component being in charge of setting up of a Maintenance
Concept, the sensitization and training of School Management Committees (SMC),
to enhance their involvement in the planning, implementation and operation of
their school, as well as teachers
training measures in Didactics and Counseling Skills, Sanitation, Child Abuse
and HIV/AIDS prevention.
Total Project Implementation
Period is 48 months and has started in
July 2005.
The
total Project Funds underlying the
project appraisal amount to 12.8 Mio € (approx.11.5
Billion KSHS.) whereof 10% is contributed by the
Government
of Kenya.
