PS Ministry of
Local Government and the members of City Education Department /CCN",
April 2009
THE
SOCIAL COMPONENT
OVERVIEW
The Social
Component is envisaged to have two overall results:
-
Improvement
of the Learning Environment by individual measures
-
Repair
& Maintenance concept is functional.
Improvement of the Learning Environment
shall be achieved through capacity development of School Management Committees
(SMC’s) in participatory design of the classrooms, schoolyards and other school
facilities (e.g. sports ground, walls, etc.), activities for improvement of
health and child-friendly schools, environment, children’s rights, HIV/AIDS
mitigation etc.
A
Maintenance and Repair Concept is developed in collaboration with
the City Council of Nairobi, and applied to the participating
schools. In
addition, the overall project activities are harmonized and aligned with other
stakeholders in the spirit of the Kenya
Education Support Program (KESSP).
APPROACH
AND METHODOLOGY
The
overall approach of the Social Component is to work within the existing
structures and processes established by KESSP, and
to support existing
institutions (CCN). This approach is based on the recognition of centrality of
existing institutions and partners in
driving and sustaining the process.
The
Int. Consultants Social Team has identified existing partners, prepared terms of
reference for the various initiatives, supported
capacity building of partners’
teams and generally oversees the process. Where specialized inputs are required,
specialist NGOs
and/or Local Consultants are recruited to carry out the
implementation, whereas the Int. Consultants provides monitoring and
backstopping support. The design process itself will be done in close
collaboration with the Department of City Education.
